‘Our Library’ databank / collection

The ‘Al-Furqan Digital Library’ also includes the online catalogue of the holdings of the Al-Furqan’s physical Library. It is an electronic bibliographic database which describes the Library items, and the way of accessing them.

The Library Collection represents a cornerstone reference collection on major research areas, including Islamic manuscripts. The major subjects covered are: Qur’anic studies, Hadith, Islamic jurisprudence, Islamic theology, philosophy, science, medicine, history, geography, art and architecture, and literature; all of them written in the major Islamic languages, including Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Urdu, Swahili, Gujarati, as well as European languages and Russian. The Library collection also includes multilingual dictionaries, Arabic biographical dictionaries and encyclopaedias, covering the classical period to the present time.

To date, the Library has collected over 11,000 titles in more than 16,000 volumes, on various subjects. Moreover, the Library's collections include almost 1,800 printed Islamic manuscript catalogues in around 2,500 volumes, from over 70 countries.

The library’s holdings are arranged and organised according to the Library of Congress Classification (LCC) for ease of use, while its collection of catalogues of Islamic manuscripts is classified by country.

Total number of Islamic MSS:13,875 (11,155 Arabic; 405 Persian; 2,315 Turkish).
Description of Collection:This library consists of six different collections.‎ Each has its own serial numbers for MSS.‎ Their names are: 1) Ulucami, 2) Orhan, 3) Hüseyin Çelebi, 4) Haraççioǧlu, 5) Kursunluoǧlu, 6) Genel.‎ The last includes the whole of the Ishak Pasa Collection formerly in Inegöl/Bursa.‎ Among these collections Haraççioǧlu is especially important.‎
Overall this is one of the richest and most important collections of MSS in Turkey, partly because Bursa was the Ottoman capital for nearly a century.‎ The library contains a large number of magnificent, old, illuminated and finely bound MSS.‎ There are also some unique copies.‎
All the MSS are kept on shelves in special rooms in the old madrese.‎ Most are in fair condition, but some have been partially damaged because of lack of maintenance and cleaning.‎ Some MSS are holed and have begun to disintegrate.‎
The collection includes the following subjects: Qurʾans, Qurʾanic studies, exegesis, Islamic sciences, mathematics, astronomy, fiqh, Ḥadith, Sufism, biography, philosophy, geography, language, literature and history.‎
Examples of important MSS are: 1) Kitab al-Ṣaydana (dated 678/ 1279), by Abu Rayḥan Muḥammad b.‎ Aḥmad al-Biruni.‎ Kursunluoǧlu 149.‎ Unique copy.‎ 2) Anfas al-jawahir (autograph copy), by Abu 'l-Faḍl Musá 'l-Izniqi (died 833/1430).‎ Ulucami 435–436.‎ Turkish translation of Al-Lubab fi maʿani 'l-tanzil by Khazin al-Baghdadi.‎ 3) Divan-i Farsi (autograph copy, dated 816/1413), by Aḥmad Daʿi.‎ Orhan 1196.‎ Ownership inscription of Sultan Bayezid II.‎
