Description of Collection: | The MSS include Bibles, ecclesiastical writings, theological writings, exegesis, testimonies of the Fathers, essays, historical writings, biographies of saints and general histories of the Church. The MSS are preserved in metal cupboards and safes, or on open metal shelves. Continuous conservation and repair work is carried out by a number of well-trained monks. The MSS are in good condition. The Library contains a valuable collection, including old Arabic MSS written on parchment and the earliest Arabic texts of the Bible. There is also a collection of Arabic and Turkish documents which are of historical importance. Two important MSS are: 1) The Four Gospels in Arabic, on parchment 859 H; 2) Kitab Ṭibb al-ʿUyun by ʿAli ibn ʿIsa, in quasi-Kufic script. |
