“Kitāb al-Fihrist” by al-Nadīm is the most important and ground-breaking bibliographical work to survey in an unprecedented way the authorship in the Islamic World. The author – in the first ten articles - methodically presents the intellectual production of the Arabic-Islamic world and the contribution of Muslim scholars to human civilisation until the end of the tenth century A.D. (fourth century A.H.). This unique piece of work presents us with a comprehensive review of Arabic culture which was open to all schools of thought. It can be said that, historically, the West had never come across a book of its kind until the start of the printing in the fifteenth century A.D. The most important addition to the new edition is the volume dedicated to the critical study of the book. The first part of this independent volume is devoted to a complete study and analysis of Ibn al-Nadīm and his book “Al-Fihrist”. The second part, instead, covers the chapters of the book and the indices. This edition also adds corrections to the work done by Muḥammad bin Tāwīt al-Ṭanjī on the book. Moreover, it provides corrections to previous mistakes, updated information and recent findings, thanks to the analysis of manuscripts that were provided to the editor by several scholars and colleagues.
